What's new in Spanish class?

It's that time again--time for our annual symbolic migration to Mexico.

Yes, this week we mailed our paper monarch butterflies to Mexico along with about 50,000 other paper monarchs created by students all across North America, in order to observe the over-wintering of these insects in Mexico.

In the spring, both the live and paper monarchs will return!

Interesting Butterfly Facts:

During the winter, real Monarchs from the U.S. and Canada will over-winter in Mexico, where it is warmer. Then, in the spring, when the real Monarchs return to their homes, the paper Monarchs will also be mailed back to the American and Canadian students who sent them.

Then, we should be busy providing feeding grounds for these Monarchs by planting milkweed in our gardens, and by limiting our use of pesticides that are toxic to the Monarch.

Monarchs feed on milkweed. God designed this special diet to protect them. Predators do not like the way the milkweed diet makes the Monarchs taste, so they remember the Monarchs' beautiful colors, and just stay away from them.

You can buy milkweed seeds and plants in a garden shop, but if you spray the milkweed with bug sprays, then the Monarchs will be made sick by eating their favorite food.

Garden pests can be shoo'ed away without poisons, just by using soap sprays on garden plants.

Ordinary lavender scented household cleaner, such as liquid Fabuloso, when put into a hose spray attachment and sprayed on ornamental plants, will send many bugs and caterpillars away. Lavender is one perfume bugs do not like!

«¡Buen Viaje!» means, "Have a good trip!"

The Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag is a patriotic symbol loved by many. Here it is in Spanish:

Juro fidelidad a la bandera de los Estados Unidos de America, y a la republica que representa: una nacion, bajo Dios, indivisible, con libertad y justicia para todos.

What's Cooking?

With Cinco de Mayo right around the corner, here's a great recipe for salsa:

Pico de Gallo

4 medium tomatoes, coarsely chopped

1 small onion finely chopped

2-3 jalapeños, seeded and chopped

1/4 cup cilantro

1 small clove garlic, minced

2 tablespoons lime juice

salt

ground pepper

Mix all ingredients in a medium bowl. Cover and refrigerate one hour or up to three days for flavors to blend. Makes 1 1/2 cups.
