High School Options for Foreign Language

Facts you need to know for enrollment in Spanish II:

1. Our textbook, Paso a Paso I, is on the state adopted list for high school foreign language.

2. The teacher is certified to teach Spanish and German K-12.

3. The passing grade from one level of a foreign language to another is 80%. This is because a student cannot expect to succeed with less than 80% retention of a previous foreign language level. A passing grade of 80% does not guarantee acceptance to the next level within, or to, any school. The student may be asked to take an entrance exam (usually the end test for the previous year), particularly if the high school is using a different text.

4. Some of our students have scored so well in their studies here that they were placed into Spanish II without an entrance exam. Others were placed into Spanish II (honors) after an entrance exam.

5. A precedent has been set in this area for public schools accepting the transfer of grade quality points for Spanish I, from 8th grade to high school, for credit. Our students have been included. Although there is no guarantee given, with the precedent having been set, you may appeal to receive state credit from your high school administration, if your grades and any required testing indicate successful completion of Spanish I.

6. Our Paso a Paso class is a full high school level Spanish I course, with a text formatted especially for middle school students, and it includes the preterite (i.e. simple past) tense.

Travel News
Here's a look at a mission trip some of my students and I took to Costa Rica.
"Ticos" (People from Costa Rica) live in the most "European" of the Central American countries. Their country is known for its paradise-like beauty and natural life, and for its tip-top cleanliness. The photos really do not do justice to this haven for photographers and sportmen.
The water at the Pacific shore is pale aqua in color, surrounded with soft, putty-colored sand. Wild coati roam the beaches at this particular resort. The coati looks like a raccoon, but grows to the stature of a wolf and has the curiosity of a neighborhood dog. God surely did some of His best handi-work in this beautiful land.
We spent a morning visiting a public middle school, for an open gym competition of relays, medicine ball, etc. Afterward, our guest speaker, a missionary from a U.S.-based Gospel outreach ministry, gave the message. When he finished his talk, quite a few students came down from the bleachers to sign up for neighborhood Bible studies. Our visit gave him the opportunity to go into the school with us and talk to the students about Jesus. Costa Rica is a land filled with beautiful churches, but it is always fun for young people to get together for worship and study.
Many of our students exchanged e-mail addresses with the young Ticos.
On another afternoon we passed out a thousand Gospel tracts to passersby in downtown San José. There is a very high literacy rate in Costa Rica. People will stop right in front of you and read whatever you hand them before tucking it into their leather business attachès. Ticos are very friendly, and Costaricense food is very fresh and tasty.
The flight into the capital is very picturesque. The airport is in a valley ringed with mountains. It's hard to say good-bye to this tropical paradise!

Your Maestra went down the Pacuare River in a raft.
We drove through jungle like this to get to the river. Awesome things, like orchids, grow wild there!
The students and chaperones lodged across from this volcano on two trips. It erupts every day...smoke by day...fireworks by night.
There was delicious dining and swimming at Tabacon Hot Springs.
I hope you enjoyed your "journey".
